A French painter

who mixes medium and techniques to push the boundaries of contemporary painting.

Passionate about arts and sciences and the delicate alchemy of colours, Clément paints large canvases and papers with his hands, mainly using brushes to create his backgrounds. Painter, draftsman and sculptor, he mixes acrylic with pastels, pencils and inks, shaping colorful canvases with a predominance of blue, yellow and red.

Clément Denis

Clément, a french painter and mosaicist, embarked on his artistic journey at the Ecole Pivaut, a renowned instituyion for applied arts and narrative drawing in Nantes. His passion for the arts led him to Les Ateliers de Sèvres, a preparatory school for Europe’s premier art institutions, and eventually to the prestigious Beaux Arts de Paris, the National School of Fine Arts. During his formative years at Beaux Arts, he was fortunate to be mentored by François Boisrond, a prominent figure in the French Figuration Libre movement.
Clément’s intellectual and creative horizons were broadened by the teachings of writer Pierre Bergounious, leaving a lasting imprint on his philosophical and literary perspectives. At Beaux Arts, he also had the opportunity to refine his mosaic craftsmanship, working with exquisite materials such as Venetian smalti and Murano glass paste.
While Clément’s artistic influences draw from ancient Sumerian philosophy to mid-twentieth-century thinkers like Majorana, Hesse, and Deleuze, his artistic process is unmistakably contemporary. He begins by creating collages sourced from online databases and distorts some of his photographs using AI.
The transition from concept to canvas is an intensely personal and physically immersive process. In total darkness, devoid of assistance, he channels his entire being, reminiscent of the action painting techniques of artists like Pollock and De Kooning.

Parallel to his artistic pursuits, Clément pursued a course on climate change at the Ecole Normale Supérieure and the French Development Agency (AFD), reflecting his deep connection to the natural world, which often finds expression in his artwork. Some of his pieces have graced the covers and pages of music albums, PHS theses, and art publications. Clément’s artistic presence extends globally, with representation in Asia through the Whiestone Gallery, in Austria through the Lindengrün Gallery, and in the USA through the Nicolas Auvray Gallery. His first monograph, “Ut pictura poesis”, was published in both French and English in 2022 by Editions Lord Byron. A second art book, “Emotional Archives”, featuring new paintings, drawings, and poems created during his upcoming artistic residency in the Sahara Desert in Chad, is set to be published in September 2024.

Clément’s contributions to the art world have earned him recognition, including the By Collectors Prize in 2019, established by two members of the Prix Marcel Duchamps ADIAF. He was also featured in Manifesto Magazine as one of the seven emerging artists to watch in 2019
